A New Age Is Upon Us – AGE OF EMPIRES IV

After Age of Empires III was released on October 18, 2005, the successor to the game has now been announced by Microsoft on August 21, 2017. The franchise started in 1997 with the original Age of Empires game. Soon after, AoE 2: The Age of Kings was released in 1999. The now-obsolete Ensemble Studios developed the first three of these epic strategy games and this year Relic Entertainment is the developing studio for the Age of Empires IV PC game.

“We can’t wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community,” Relic said in its own announcement.

When Microsoft announced that the new game is in the making, it did not release much information about the game. It did not even mention the Age of Empires IV’s System Requirements except that the game will be published solely for Windows 10. Microsoft has also kept us in the dark as far as the Age of Empires IV’s release date is concerned. No news what so ever.

However, the announcement trailer has been released to keep teasing the fans of the award winning strategy game. Upon examining the concept art depicted in the trailer, we can easily say that this tremendous game will take the franchise to a singular new era. The footage shows a wide pool of armies hailing from different regions: Japan, Rome, America, Britain and various other places.

But that’s not all.

Microsoft also announced that they will be releasing ‘Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, Forgotten Empires’ in October, 2019. It will be a 4K remaster of the original Age of Empires, the game which changed RTS games forever. Like Age of Empires IV, this game will only be available for Windows 10.

All these games are to be released after a year or so. Nevertheless, Age of Empires 1, 2 and 3 are also getting a remastered version. The Definitive Editions are expected to be released by October 19, 2017. The new and improved versions are going to have major changes listed below:

  • New Music
  • Attack Move
  • 250-300 population cap
  • Rally Points Basic
  • Rally Points Contextual (Intelligent Villagers)
  • Grid default key layout
  • Select Idle Military
  • Select Idle Villagers
  • Unit queuing
  • Right-click mouse scroll

“We have redone every single asset,” said Adam Isgreen, creative director at Microsoft Studios. Since the original game’s debut in October 1997, the franchise has released many games and a few spin-offs as well. This year the game is going to turn 20 years old.

In addition, said Isgreen, “We’ve re-orchestrated and re-recorded the entire soundtrack to the game” with a symphony. Xbox Live will offer the option of Multiplayer as well. In 2013, the second installment in the franchise got the upgrade. Age of Empires 2 HD was released in 2013 on the gaming platform of steam. This time around the studio that developed Age of Empires 2 HD’s expansions, Forgotten Empires, is making the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires.
